Chiming in late here with a parent's ptpscereive. In brief, I like the idea but question how well it can be implemented. My oldest son went through an excellent GATE program from 2nd through 6th grade. The teachers were all motivated and good at what they did. He rarely complained about the workload. He then moved on to a well-respected intermediate school that had combined classes in 7th grade, where students of all levels were grouped together and given the option to do additional honors work. The quotations indicate that it was really just extra work: More reading for the reading counts requirement, an extra essay here and there, a couple extra homework problems now and then, but nothing qualitatively different from the normal curriculum. Moreover, my impression was that the more advanced students were hesitant to speak out in class for fear of being labelled nerdy. He now mostly resents the extra work and doesn't feel he's benefiting from it. If he didn't need the honors designation to progress to the AP track in High School, I would pull him out of the honors program so he could devote the time he spends doing the honors work to something more engaging and rewarding.

Dear John,it's so nice to read your blog and look at the beautiful pohots.Came accross it via Next Step Integral am thinking to come to Mount Madonna Center in August I really like your idea about examining our eating habits and investigating where the food we eat actually comes from. It's an excellent idea to make studnets feel, see and understand the way we are linked to everything.I'm currently teaching my year 12 students (17-18 years old)in geography about agriculture and sustanability. I'm teaching at a German High School and they are the first course interested in these questions. I might try your idea as well will probably modify it a little bit as I only see them once a week.Spring is slowly arriving here in southern Germany with typical showers, drizzles, short periods of sunshine but very enjoyable.Enjoy the Easter Break if there is any at your place, cheers,Claudia, Freiburg, Germany

Hi Grant,I could not agree more with your sentiments. Anyone who has aevecihd success inside academia is likely to believe that this may be hard but is perfectly do-able and, as a survivor, may be unaware of the plight of those that did not make it. In addition, having been brought up inside the academic system plus being surrounded by people with shared values and similar career paths, academics may simply struggle to see how an alternative career can lead to job satisfaction and success. It is possibly a tall order (even unfair?) to ask academics to wholeheartedly and sincerely validate alternative career paths they have had no experience of whatsoever. Perhaps a relatively simple fix would be to add a range of ex science graduates from the University who are successful in a non-academic career to the list of speakers to students. That should not be difficult to accomplish. http://yyrbxfqoxi.com dauqyeoklc [link=http://mgvshdee.com]mgvshdee[/link]
