Nick,Semi-regular reader. Great blog, first of all and wrneuofdl enthusiasm for your profession. I commend you. This is a very interesting topic that last showed its teeth in relation to the middle school Honors courses established there. These same arguments were made then and those reflecyed here posted by the other side of the aisle. I wonder if, almost by happenstance, the hypothesis you seek to test, already exists. In other words, might a class with a mix of students who might be deemed, by themselves or by others as Honors worthy and those who might not, already be in place where a fellow teacher could share their perspective?I think the risk is in the design is among the students who willfully choose to NOT take honors track courses knowing that they could have been challenged more. Not sure if I'm being clear, but they basically opt in to a less challenging course. This doesn't mean to say having honors is the answer. The question is does the course title influence behavior just on its own, irrelevant of the course content.Anyways, great topic and I will be interested to hear more,Best,Brendan

in my own post) that the scientists get reiinocgton for this. As things stand at the moment for uni scientists it's PBRF all the way down; talking with school students may be seen as a Good Thing but it also doesn't get any brownie points in the PBRF system. There's also the idea of having a lead' science teacher in primary schools, but personally I think good professional development for all would be more productive. And the fact that wretched game involving an ovoid ball is deemed sufficiently important to muck around with the school terms really really annoys me. I was down in Hastings running a Schol Bio workshop this weekend & one of the teachers was saying that they'll basically get 2 weeks with their senior kids after the break & then it's off to exams; really useful [not]. You're right on the button, science_girl we wouldn't see this happening for something major in the science-y world.

You are going to have a rellay hard time finnidg a book on this topic. The only free and legal nonfiction book that is online is the section of the CIA World Factbook. Chances are your local public library or school library also has in paper.Egypt After Mubarak, 2008. by Bruce Rutherford. Amazon has the Kindle version for $ 19.25.

It is possibly a tall order (even ufniar?) to ask academics to wholeheartedly and sincerely validate alternative career paths they have had no experience of whatsoever. SAB, I consider it morally reprehensible for academics not to consider alternative options for their students. Most academics produce more PhDs than can find employment as academics, so if they are going to use these graduates to advance their own careers by producing more research and publications I think they have a moral obligation to assist students to consider all their options. This doesn't have to involve much time or handholding by the academics more an attitude adjustment and providing students with information. I think your idea of universities inviting those who have been successful in other areas than academia in to talk to students is a great idea. http://rbetvyv.com gzhvylgfk [link=http://vlscobsrcgg.com]vlscobsrcgg[/link]
